Question: Can someone curse a Christian?

Answer: Of course someone can choose to speak death over a person or situation and that would be a curse. Any thing spoken that is demonically empowered is a curse. If demons take the words of a person, Christian or non-Christian, and try to perform them then a curse has been released. God speaks clearly in His Word that we are to bless those who persecute us and speak against us (Romans 12:14). We are not to use the power of our words to speak negatively into situations.

The Holy Spirit released a curse against Ananias and Sapphira using Peter’s obedience (Acts Chapter 4 and 5). If you study the New Testament you will find a few examples of the apostles cursing those coming against the Gospel. So we see very rare circumstances in which the Holy Spirit instructs that some be turned over to the enemy so that repentance might come or to see holiness prevail in the church. However, we are not to curse people with our own understanding. We are to pray for people that they might turn from their evil and sins. The apostolic anointing that we see in the life of Peter and Paul is in the process of being restored to the church. Until we reach a higher level of maturity in Christ and truly walk in His love, I don’t feel this power to curse evil will be restored to our life. As the Apostolic restoration begins to unfold, we will move into deeper revelations of the power that we have as we yield to the Holy Spirit.

Should we be concerned about being cursed? I have found that if I feel the spirit of oppression around me, I just seek the Holy Spirit and ask Him what I should do. Many times He has instructed me to bless those that have cursed me. Gossip and manipulative prayer even among Christians is actually witchcraft. And releasing a blessing stops the schemes of evil and I believe sends angels to bind up the demonic spirit of oppression. It really is quite simple to discern a spirit of oppression and then release blessing to cause the enemy to lose his deceptive power of heaviness. I do not believe that a curse has any power to harm a person who is walking in God’s will. In the story of Balaam (study Numbers Chapters 22-23) you will find that God will not allow a true prophet to release a curse on anyone in His will. The curse actually can return to those who sent the curse (in mercy we should ask God to bless those who sent the curse and trust God with the outcome of those who are operating in demonic power).

If you walk in the ways of God and have a reverent fear of His holiness and the consequences of being out of His will, then you will live in the blessing of God. If you walk in self- deception and exchange His holiness for worldliness then your sin will open the door for cursing to attach to your life. (see Deu 11:26-30:20) The only way to find complete safety from being under a curse is to live your life yielded to the Holy Spirit. Repent quickly and sincerely for the sin that we unknowing fall into during our day to day journey through life. If you walk in rebellion and blatant sin then ask the Lord to set you free from these demonic strongholds in your life. You will need healing in the wounded places in your life and deliverance from the demonic powers that control you. Do not hide from this bondage but face it and allow the Lord to deal with the issues of your heart.

Let’s pray: Dear Heavenly Father,

Forgive me for using my mouth to curse those made in your image. Lord help me to stay free from gossip and other forms of witchcraft that empowers our enemy. Lord give me wisdom to bless when I feel oppression or I know that someone is coming against me. I leave all vengeance to you Lord, for to you it belongs. Help me to forgive and walk in the love that you demonstrated when you were nailed to the cross. Jesus, continue to work in my heart and make me holy. Amen
